I started building custom surfboards in 1968 in Woodland Hills, California, after repairing and selling Yater and Jacobs boards. My early longboards were influenced by Yater “Spoons,” Mickey Dora’s parallel outlines, and Greg Noll’s “Da Cat.”

When the shortboard revolution arrived, I was inspired by George Greenough’s designs after seeing Nat Young surf a Greenough-inspired Keyo board at Malibu. I made early versions of this concept and spent the next 20 years experimenting with all aspects of design, from very short, thin boards to wide-nosed shapes and extreme rail and bottom variations.

These “displacement hulls” (or “transitional volume displacement hulls”) were designed for California point breaks like Malibu. They emphasized full-rail turns and down-the-line surfing, rewarding skill and wave connection rather than pivot-style maneuvers. Over time, the designs became more refined and efficient for the small, powerful California waves.

After moving to Hawaii in 1991, I adapted the California designs by adding length, volume, and nose rocker, and narrowing the outline. This created versatile boards that retained the smooth, fast, down-the-line feel of the original hulls while making waves easier to catch across a wide range of sizes. - Greg Liddle
